Although they’ve been around for ages, today’s dentures are more comfortable and natural looking than those of the past. Dentures can either replace all of your teeth or a few, which is known as partial dentures.
Both types may require that some teeth be pulled or that some surgery be performed on the bony ridges beneath the gums to better accommodate your new dentures so they have a perfect feel and “fit.”
What to Expect
The process begins by taking an impression of your teeth, followed by a series of appointments to plan the position, shape and colour of the teeth to make dentures custom fit to you!
If there any extractions are necessary, then an ‘immediate’ denture can be fabricated acting as a ‘band-aid’ to allow the gums to heal underneath whilst preserving function and aesthetics. Dentures may be full or partial dentures depending on the number of teeth which are required to be replaced and the substructure of the denture can be constructed out of acrylic or chromium cobalt.
Both full and partial dentures should be removed nightly before you go to sleep, so that your gums can “breathe” and be cleaned along with the denture to maintain a healthy mouth.
